It’s been a tough start to the year for private debt, as the number of private debt transactions dropped to its lowest level in a decade. In the first half of 2023, there were 259 deals and aggregate deal value was $38bn, allowing for a delay in some data gathering which may increase these figures. By comparison, the first half of 2022 saw over double the number of deals (558) and aggregate deal value was close to triple ($111.9bn). This drop tracks an annual decline in private debt deals since 2021, a record year where aggregate deal value reached 234.5bn across 1,457 deals.
