Private debt funds continue to grow larger. The average size of funds has ballooned to $1.57bn in 2022 year to date, 66% higher than 2021 and more than double that of 2020. This is also considerably more than the average fund size of $762mn of private equity funds closed in H1 2022. This is due to a number of large funds closing in Q2 2022, such as the $4.6bn Carlyle Credit Opportunities Fund II and the $2.9bn first-time 17Capital Credit Fund. Overall, global private debt fundraising has been increasing consistently since 2017, with 261 funds raising $214bn in 2021 and 78 funds raising $110bn this year to date. The increase in fund sizes means that GPs can provide much larger tranches of capital to individual companies.
