How Has COVID-19 Impacted Private Debt in Europe?
Private debt fundraising has impacted differently in the markets of Europe than in Asia or North America. While in the last two regions fundraising declined in Q1 2020, Europe-focused private debt fundraising augmented, and Q2 seems to be decreasing.
In Q1 2020, ten Europe-focused funds raised an aggregate of $12.4bn, an increase of 8% from Q4 2019. Although it didn’t reach the record figure seen in Q3 2019 of $14.7bn raised, in Q1 2020 the average fund size peaked to $1.4bn, the highest amount ever seen in a quarter. In the first two months of Q2, fundraising has sharply declined and just four funds have been closed securing a combined $2.3bn. Among all the funds closed so far this year, GSO European Senior Debt Fund II is the largest one, raising $5bn.
