Private Debt slow to adopt ESG Frameworks
In most alternative asset classes, ESG has been the acronym on everyone’s lips, but not so much in the private debt industry. A total of 292 private debt fund managers are signatories to ESG/impact investing frameworks tracked by Preqin. A record 40 private debt fund managers became signatories to ESG frameworks in 2019, and the number of new signatories has grown in each of the past three years. A quarter of surveyed private debt investors have an ESG policy in place, and a further 12% intend to implement an ESG policy over the next 12 months. There is clearly an ongoing structural shift in investors’ attitudes toward ESG considerations, and managers are responding to it.
