Private debt firms behind the curve on D&I

Chart

Download Data

Just 11% of private debt fund managers (251 out of 2,225) have public diversity and inclusion (D&I) policies or initiatives in place, according to Preqin Pro. This puts them third amongst alternative asset classes, behind both infrastructure (21%) and natural resources (17%). Infrastructure firms’ comparatively good performance could be put down to their larger size, with an average $921.2mn in AUM per manager, compared to $533.5mn in private debt, and Preqin ESG data shows that larger managers are more likely to have public ESG policies. The low proportions in private equity and real estate can at least in part be explained by the fact that these longer established asset classes have a large number of smaller managers.
