Private debt sees leap in impact funds
Private debt has seen a rise in the number of impact funds, defined as funds with the intention of generating a measurable, beneficial environmental or social impact alongside financial returns, being raised over the year, reaching a new high in 2021 with 12 funds either raising or already closed. Sine 2002, 54 impact funds have been raised in the asset class, the majority of which have a North American focus. Within strategies, 37 impact funds have or are being raised in direct lending, the most popular private debt strategy. This followed by venture debt (nine impact funds) and mezzanine (five funds).
