more than 2.5 times full year 2017 totals

Global socially responsible financing continues to gain traction with nearly US$33bn in new green and ESG loan assets working their way through the market so far this year. With another 3 months left to 2018, year to date green and sustainable loan totals are already over 2.5 times greater than that of full year 2017 results. Issuance out of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) not only continues to dramatically outpace that of other regions at nearly US$25bn year to date, but also represents over 75% of global green and sustainable lending. More impressive is the fact that year to date EMEA issuance is already nearly three times that of the US$8.3bn raised in 2017. While considerably lagging their European counterparts, each of the Americas and Asia Pacific (ex Japan) made their first forays into green and sustainable loan market, raising over US$2.2bn and nearly US$3.6bn respectively. On the back of the launch of Green Loan Principles by the LMA,and APLMA with the support of the LSTA, guidance around green loan criteria, while not fully fleshed out, is nonetheless being framed with an eye toward reliable markers and thresholds. In turn, this is expected to support innovation, more assets, and ultimately an expanded pool of investors.
