European private debt AUM has shown enormous expansion in recent years. It has more than doubled since December 2014 and more than tripled since December 2012, reaching €179bn as of December 2019. However, seems that the presence of attractive opportunities has made the dry powder fall. Between 2018 and 2019 dry powder has decreased 3%, from €61bn to €59bn. This is the first time dry powder has fallen in European private debt since the period between 2015 and 2016, from €36.1bn to €35.9bn. Despite its growth, private debt remains as the second smallest asset class in the region. Up in front of natural resources, private debt represents 9% of the total alterative industry AUM in Europe.
