The Private Debt Market Remains Crowded
The private debt market remains crowded amid COVID-19. As at 15th of June there are 485 funds in market seeking a combined $247bn. The number of funds in market is slightly up from the start of the year, but the amount targeted has increased a 22%. At the beginning of 2020 there were 436 funds in market targeting $192bn.
Direct lending funds account for around half of both the number of funds in market and the total capital sought – the strategy has 224 funds in market seeking for $103bn. Although numbers show that distressed debt funds are the largest in market; there are 59 funds seeking $70bn – the average fund size ascends to $1.1bn. By region-focus, North America remains the most targeted with 266 funds in market looking to invest in that location, followed by Europe with 125 funds in market.
