The Expanding Fund Manager Universe
The number of participants in the private debt asset class has grown at a remarkable pace since the GFC. There are currently over 1,700 fund managers active in the industry, over twice as many as five years ago. Asia has historically accounted for a modest share of the global private debt market, but its size and influence has ballooned in recent times. Beyond Asia, investors from across the globe have flocked to private debt, giving rise to more active managers. In the US, for example, the number of active fund managers has increased by 7% over the past year to 930. Half of all private debt fund managers are headquartered in North America, Asia has recorded the highest growth in active managers over the past 12 months, up 18%.
