Deal Activity Continued to Decline over 2020
Private debt deal activity slowed over 2020. A total of 780 deals were completed with an aggregate value of $66bn. Both figures were down compared to 2019, when $69bn were issued across 976 deals completed. However, the average deal value rose – in 2020 the average deal value of private debt-backed deals was $85mn, up 20% from 2019’s $71mn. From June 2020, there was an uptick in deals in one of the most damaged areas of the market: transportation. The transportation industry saw a notable jump in private debt financing to $5.4bn in total deal value, up more than $5bn compared with 2019.
