After a brief pause in its long-running rally, the Bloomberg US Leveraged Loan Index (Ticker: LOAN) advanced 1.53% in May, bringing its YTD return to 1.95%. The gain follows back-to-back losses in March (-0.29%) and April (-0.17%) and restores some momentum to a market that had previously logged 21 straight months of gains.
The Loan Index was among the better performing US fixed income asset classes this month. While the LOAN Index (1.53%) underperformed US High Yield (1.68%) by 15 bps, it outperformed US Floating Rate Notes (0.55%), US Treasury (-1.03%) and US Aggregate (-0.72%) by 98 bps, 256 bps and 225 bps respectively.
