Private debt fund managers raised $181bn in aggregate capital, accounting for 17.2% of the over $1tn raised by all private capital funds in 2023 year-to-date (YTD). This means private debt accounts for the second highest proportion of fundraising, after private equity with 67%. Private debt’s proportion of private capital fundraising first overtook real estate in 2020, at 14.3% versus 12.1% respectively. After three years of a 1-2 percentage point difference between real estate and private debt, 2023 saw private debt surpass real estate by 6 percentage points. The asset class’s fundraising will likely continue to increase as 51% of investors surveyed by Preqin seek to increase their private debt allocations over the long term.
