Direct Lending Targeted in Private Debt Fundraising
Although Q1 2021 saw a drop in both the number of private debt funds closed and aggregate capital raised, the outlook for the sector remains positive. As of April 2021, aggregate capital targeted stands at $300bn, up 56% compared to the start of 2020. Direct lending strategies are seeking the most capital, representing 31% of aggregate capital targeted, though this is down four percentage points year-on-year.
North America maintained a clear lead over other regions in funds raised, with 19 funds closed raising a total of $18.4bn. By comparison seven funds in Europe raised a combined $5.6bn. Direct lending funds attracted the majority of capital in Q1 2021, accounting for 53% of funds closed and 74% of aggregate capital raised.
