Record Amounts of Funds and Capital
in the Private Debt Market
The number of private debt funds in market and the capital targeted have reached new records at the beginning of Q4 – 521 funds in market seeking for a combined $295bn. This is a 54% increase compared to January 2020, when funds on the road were looking to secure $192bn. But these funds are not all focused on higher-risk strategies or looking to take advantage of distressed or special situations. Most of funds in market are direct lending vehicles (47%), targeting almost half of the total capital raised. However, distressed debt funds are still on demand and they represent 13% of those in market at the start of Q4 2020. On the flip side, venture debt and fund of funds represent the smallest proportion of funds in market, 7% and 2% respectively.
