Has Asia-Focused Private Debt
Been Impacted by COVID-19?
The Asian private debt market is still relatively small, and expansion has been slower than in the more developed regions of Europe and North America. The region has yet to reach a ‘critical mass’, so activity remains cyclical. Has there been a significant change amid the pandemic period?
In Q4 2019, Asia-focused privet debt funds raised $4.8bn, the second highest amount secured in a quarter. But in Q1 2019, fundraising lagged – only five funds were closed, securing a combined $0.4bn, being this the sharpest fall ever seen and showing figures not reached since Q2 2017. Nevertheless, in Q2 2020, figures are increasing and as at the 27th of May 2020, $2bn have been raised. Most of it can be attributed to the CDH RMB Mezzanine V fund, which closed in April with $1.1bn secured. With 38 funds currently in market focusing on the region, figures are expected to increase even more.
